PEX-a: The More Sustainable Choice in Piping

PEX-a pipe requires no soldering, no flux, and no torch — eliminating lead and chemical contamination risks. Its flexibility means fewer fittings, fewer potential leak points, and less material waste on every installation. Uponor's AquaPEX is manufactured without plasticizers and is fully recyclable at end of service life.

Trusted by Mechanical Professionals

"The ProPEX expansion system is the fastest, most reliable rough-in I've ever installed. We switched our entire plumbing division to Uponor AquaPEX three years ago and haven't had a single leak-back call."

Marcus T.
Master Plumber, Trident Mechanical, Houston TX

"Their engineering team designed our entire radiant system — slab layouts, manifold schedule, mixing valve sizing — at no charge. That level of technical support is unmatched in this industry."

Sarah K.
PE, Meridian Building Systems, Denver CO

"We specified Uponor pre-insulated pipe for a district heating expansion covering 11 city blocks. Installation was clean, the insulation performance exceeded spec, and the 25-year warranty gave our client confidence."

Everything You Need to Know About Uponor PEX

Our engineering team answers the questions contractors and specifiers ask most often.

Ask Our Engineers

PEX-a (Uponor AquaPEX) uses the Engel peroxide method during manufacturing, producing the highest degree of crosslinking (min. 75%) and the most flexible, kink-resistant pipe. Unlike PEX-b or PEX-c, PEX-a has shape memory — kinks can be repaired with a heat gun. PEX-b uses moisture-cure crosslinking and is stiffer; PEX-c uses electron beam radiation. ProPEX connections are exclusive to PEX-a and create a stronger bond than crimp or clamp methods used with PEX-b/c.

The ProPEX tool expands the end of the AquaPEX pipe and the ProPEX expansion ring simultaneously. The fitting is inserted, and the pipe's memory causes it to contract back toward its original diameter — creating a compression seal that gets tighter over time. No crimping tool torque variation. No clamp positioning errors. Independent testing confirms ProPEX connections exceed the burst pressure of the pipe itself.

Yes. Uponor's engineering services team — staffed by licensed professional engineers — provides complimentary radiant system design assistance including slab layout drawings, manifold sizing, tubing schedules, and thermal load verification. Submit your project drawings through our System Design page or contact your regional sales engineer.

Uponor AquaPEX and ProPEX fittings are listed by IAPMO to ASTM F876/F877 standards for both UPC and IPC compliance. All potable water products meet NSF/ANSI 61 for drinking water safety and NSF/ANSI 14 for material performance. Products are also ICC-ES evaluated and listed by the Plastics Pipe Institute (PPI). All certifications are from independent, accredited third-party bodies.

Uponor offers a 25-year limited warranty on AquaPEX PEX-a tubing against manufacturing defects when installed in accordance with Uponor's installation guidelines and applicable plumbing codes. The warranty covers the pipe, ProPEX fittings, and brass valves when used as a complete Uponor system. Full warranty terms are available on the product documentation page.
