48 Hours to an Outdoor Shower: What a Rush Job Taught Me About Quality

It was 2:37 on a Thursday afternoon when a number I didn't recognize popped up on my phone. Most calls like that go to voicemail. This one, for some reason, I picked up.

"Hi," the voice said. "I got your name from Anderson's plumber — they said you handle emergency jobs? My name is Dana. And I think I'm in trouble."

That's how it always starts. Trouble.

Here's what I learned in about two minutes: Dana's contractor had walked off the job two days before — a dispute over change orders, she said — leaving her pool house with a half-finished outdoor shower and bare PEX stub-outs sticking through the deck. I also told her what I tell every homeowner: don't try to DIY this with aerosol cans. At $8 to $15 a can it looks like a no-brainer, but you'll end up with inconsistent coverage, air pockets, and eventually condensation issues. That's not me guarding my industry — it's just physics.

She nodded. "Okay. Add it to the quote."

Saturday Morning

At 11:30 Friday, I made one more call — Marcus, a wholesale plumbing rep I've known for years, runs a shop two towns over.

Bottom line: in an emergency, the best time-saving strategy is the same as it is on a normal job. Use the right part. Do it right the first time. And don't let a deadline talk you into something you'll have to undo.
