Uponor PEX-A or PEX-B? An Office Administrator's Honest FAQ After a Year of Ordering These Systems

I'm the office administrator for a 140-person property management company. I handle material ordering for our maintenance contractors—roughly $85,000 annually across 14 vendors. In early 2024, our lead plumber started specifying Uponor for a mid-rise retrofit. I had no idea what PEX-A meant, and I definitely didn't know why it mattered. Is Uponor PEX-A or PEX-B?

Uponor is PEX-A. Their entire residential and commercial plumbing line—AquaPEX, Wirsbo hePEX, ProPEX—uses PEX-A tubing. If a supplier tries to sell you "Uponor PEX-B," they're either confused or selling something that isn't Uponor.

According to the ASTM F877 standard (the spec that governs PEX tubing), PEX-A is crosslinked using the Engel method—peroxide crosslinking that happens after extrusion. PEX-B uses the silane method. This isn't marketing fluff; the manufacturing difference affects how the pipe behaves under stress.

For me, the practical version is this: PEX-A can be expanded and will return to its original shape. That means it handles tight bends better and works with expansion fittings—which is what Uponor's ProPEX system uses.

Why Does PEX-A vs PEX-B Actually Matter for My Orders?

For basic straight-run work, honestly, either type will usually pass inspection. But you're ordering Uponor specifically, so I'm assuming your spec calls for PEX-A characteristics.

Here's where it bit me: our contractors were doing retrofits in older buildings with tight corners and existing manifold setups. PEX-A can be expanded and re-formed around those bends. PEX-B can't without risking stress fractures years down the line.

I once ordered fittings for a job without confirming they were compatible with the pipe our contractor had on site. Turns out he had PEX-B from a different supplier for a small repair. Mixing PEX-A expansion fittings with PEX-B pipe doesn't work. Cost us a $1,400 return and a two-day delay that almost cost us a milestone payment.

Bottom line: If the spec says Uponor, buy Uponor pipe and Uponor-compatible fittings. Don't mix.

Are Uponor Fittings Compatible With Other Brands' PEX Pipe?

This is where I nearly made a second mistake. Uponor's ProPEX fittings use expansion-style connections. They're designed for PEX-A pipe. They will not work with PEX-B or PEX-C pipe.

According to the ASTM F1960 standard (which covers PEX-a expansion fittings), the fitting system relies on the pipe's ability to expand and then shrink back around the fitting. PEX-B doesn't have the same expansion ratio. So even if a fitting feels like it "sort of" fits, it won't hold.

What I've learned: Verify the pipe type before ordering fittings. I now keep a one-page reference sheet with pipe brands and their PEX type. Took me an hour to make. Has saved me at least three phone calls since.

What Documentation Should Come With an Uponor Order?

For our commercial projects, I require three things on every Uponor order:

  • Manufacturer certification showing the pipe meets ASTM F877 and, for PEX-a specifically, ASTM F1960 for the fittings
  • Warranty documentation—Uponor's standard warranty runs up to 25 years for plumbing systems when installed by a licensed contractor, but you need the paper trail
  • Batch/lot numbers for traceability

When we didn't get proper lot numbers on a shipment last fall, our contractor couldn't verify the pipe against the spec sheet. We had to hold the entire order for four days while the distributor tracked down documentation. That's four days of a crew sitting idle.

Now I don't sign off on a delivery without those three documents in hand.

Why Is Uponor More Expensive Than Other PEX?

This one I can answer from the procurement side: You're paying for the system, not just the pipe.

When I priced PEX-B alternatives against Uponor for a 40-unit job in Q2 2024, the pipe cost was about 30% lower with the budget brand. But that didn't account for the fact that we'd need different fittings, different tools, and our contractor would need to re-certify on a different system. When I ran the full numbers—pipe, fittings, labor adjustment for unfamiliarity—Uponor came out only about 8% more expensive.

And then there's this: When we used a cheaper PEX on a small job in 2023, the client's property manager specifically asked what system we'd used. She'd heard of Uponor. She hadn't heard of the budget brand. That conversation alone was worth the 8%.

Look, I'm not saying cheap is bad. I'm saying the sticker price on the pipe isn't the whole story.

How Do I Verify I'm Getting Genuine Uponor Products?

Three things I check now, every time:

  1. Printing on the pipe itself. Genuine Uponor PEX has the brand name, ASTM rating, and manufacturing code printed continuously along the pipe. If it's faint, blurry, or missing—red flag.
  2. Fitting markings. Uponor ProPEX fittings have the Uponor logo and size stamped on them. I've seen counterfeits that look close but the stamping is off-center or shallow.
  3. Packaging. Uponor ships in branded boxes with matching part numbers. If your distributor repackages, ask why.

I'm not a forensics expert, so if something feels off, I call Uponor's customer service directly and ask them to verify the lot number. They've been responsive every time I've done it.

What's the Most Common Ordering Mistake People Make With Uponor?

Ordering the pipe but forgetting the right fittings. Or ordering fittings for the wrong pipe type. Or assuming PEX-A and PEX-B are interchangeable because they both say "PEX" on the box.

They're not. And unlike some things in procurement, this isn't a mistake you can fix after the fact. Wrong fittings mean the job stops.

If you're new to ordering PEX systems, do what I wish I'd done: ask your contractor for the exact part numbers before you place the first order. Not the category. Not the size. The part numbers. Then confirm those part numbers are PEX-A compatible. Then order.

One Thing I Wish Someone Had Told Me Earlier

Uponor publishes a design manual—the "Plumbing Design Manual" and the "Radiant Floor Heating Design Manual." Your contractor probably has them. But as the person placing the order, you should at least have the ordering guide. It lists every part number, every fitting type, and every compatibility note. I found it six months in. Would have saved me at least two of the mistakes above.
