Can You Crimp Uponor PEX? Yes — But Here's What It Cost Me (Plumber's FAQ)

Short answer: physically, yes. But you probably shouldn't. Here's why, along with the other questions I wish someone had answered for me before I started.

Can You Crimp Uponor PEX?

Technically, yes. Uponor's PEX-a tubing meets the standard dimensional requirements of ASTM F876/F877, so standard crimp fittings and copper crimp rings (ASTM F1807) will physically attach to it. I've done it. A lot of guys do it.

But "probably" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

Here's the story I don't tell often enough. In 2014, my first year doing radiant heat, I was finishing a job when my expansion tool battery died. I had a manual crimp tool in the truck, a box of copper rings, and a schedule to keep. I figured PEX is PEX. I finished those manifold connections in 10 minutes and actually felt clever about it.

About 14 months later, one of those connections let go inside a finished ceiling. The total cost — drywall, insulation, redo of the connection, plus a long uncomfortable conversation with the homeowner — came to around $3,200. The expansion tool I didn't want to buy was about $600. Do the math on which one was cheaper.

Most buyers focus on the price per foot of the pipe and completely miss the connection system. That's the real cost difference. The pipe is the cheap part.

What's the Difference Between PEX-a, PEX-b, and PEX-c?

The letters refer to how the polyethylene is cross-linked during manufacturing:

  • PEX-a — made with the Engel method. The cross-linking happens during extrusion, giving the pipe its shape memory and flexibility.
  • PEX-b — made with the silane method. Cheaper and stiffer.
  • PEX-c — cross-linked with an electron beam. Less common in residential work.

PEX-b was designed for, and works well with, crimp connections. PEX-a is designed for expansion connections. When you use a crimp ring on PEX-a, you're ignoring the material's one big advantage: the fact that it tries to spring back to its original shape.

With an expansion fitting, the pipe is expanded outward using an expansion head, then the fitting sleeve is placed. As the pipe shrinks back, it locks into the sleeve with uniform radial pressure. With a crimp ring, you're squeezing a narrow band around the pipe. It works, but it doesn't use the material's strength. You end up with a connection that's basically no better than a crimped PEX-b connection.

To be fair, I've crimped PEX-a on small repairs and had it hold for years. That's exactly what makes this dangerous. It can work, up until the day it doesn't.

Will the Warranty Cover a Crimped Uponor PEX Connection?

No.

Here's what the warranty says in plain English: if you install the pipe with anything other than Uponor-approved connection methods — for PEX-a, that means ProPEX expansion fittings — you're outside the installation instructions. The warranty won't apply.

I personally watched a $4,700 water damage claim get denied because a contractor used crimp rings on Uponor PEX-a. The connection failed. Uponor asked for photos. The photo showed a copper crimp ring on their pipe. Case closed.

So the question isn't just "can you crimp Uponor PEX?" The question is whether you're willing to own 100% of the liability if that connection fails. I learned the hard way that nobody else is lining up to pay for it.

How Do I Know If I Have Uponor PEX?

Read the printing on the side of the pipe. It will say "Uponor" or the older "Wirsbo" branding, followed by "PEX-a". It might also have a production date and standard certifications printed along the length.

Color is not the answer. Uponor PEX is commonly red, white, or blue, but red could also be another brand's PEX-b. Find the printed text.

If you're old-school, you can feel the difference: PEX-a bends more easily and springs back when released. PEX-b feels stiffer and holds a bend.

If you're working with Uponor PEX-a, yes. There's no shortcut I'd recommend after what I've seen.

You don't necessarily need the powered version. The manual ProPEX tool has been around for decades and still gets the job done. It takes a little more effort, but it doesn't need a battery or a charger. There are also cordless options if you're doing a large job.

If you're a homeowner doing one radiant floor project, look into renting. Some supply houses loan out expansion tools when you buy the pipe and fittings from them. A rental is a lot cheaper than a failed connection, and it's a strange thing to skip.

I get the temptation to use what's already in your toolbox. I've been there. But this is one tool difference that actually matters.

The Mistake Nobody Warns You About

Here's the question people never ask, and the one that caused my most humbling mistake:

Is the pipe fully inserted before you expand it?

This happened in September 2022. A system passed its pressure test and failed during the final flush. The water damage was minor, but the embarrassment was not. I hadn't marked the depth before expanding, and the pipe wasn't seated all the way.

Now the rule is simple and non-negotiable: mark the pipe at the correct insertion depth with a marker before expanding. Check it visually after you push it in. Make sure it hits the shoulder of the fitting.

Another one: check the expansion head for wear. ProPEX expansion heads have a wear indicator ring. If the head is worn, you'll get an incomplete expansion even with perfect technique.

So, can you crimp Uponor PEX? Yes. Would I do it again? No. Not after the leak, not after the denied warranty claim, not after writing that $3,200 check. Use the expansion tool, mark your depth, and you'll be fine.
