When a delivery of Uponor PEX pipe and Propex LF brass fitting adapters shows up on your dock, this checklist is what you run before it goes into a building. I'm a quality compliance reviewer for a plumbing supply distributor—I check roughly 200 incoming product lots a year, and I've been doing it for the last 4 years. Most batches are fine. The problem batches are almost always the ones nobody inspected before installation.
Here's how I learned that the hard way. In early 2022, we received a shipment of 3/4" Propex LF brass adapters that looked correct from the outside. Boxes matched. Labels matched. But a bad production run had left rough threads on a portion of the female adapters. The crew installed about 60 of them before one leaked at pressure test. Fixing it cost around $6,800 in rework and pushed a commercial job past its deadline. A 10-minute check at delivery would have caught it. In my opinion, every contractor and installer who touches PEX-a should run the same checks.

Uponor PEX-a pipe has a printed line running the length of the coil. That print isn't just branding—it's your confirmation of what's inside. Look for:
Pay attention to the print quality. If the text is smudged, double-struck, or looks like it was printed over, set that coil aside. Those markings don't come out of the factory looking like that—it's a sign of gray-market or counterfeit pipe, which is a real problem in online supply channels.
Every Propex LF brass adapter carries a marking for size and the lead-free (LF) designation. The LF mark matters for code compliance on potable water lines. If a fitting that should be marked LF isn't, it fails inspection, period.
Check the fitting itself, not just the box it came in. I've seen a box labeled 3/4" with a few 1/2" fittings mixed in—that happens during repackaging more than you'd think. Turn each fitting so you can see the size marking and confirm it matches the order and the pipe.
While you're at it, run your thumb across the threads. They should feel clean and sharp. If they're rough or burred, the fitting will tear up the mating threads during assembly and show up as a leak later. Look for hairline cracks around the hex base, too. A crack visible at delivery is a crack that would have failed in the wall.
Expansion rings are one-time-use, and the size has to match the pipe exactly. A 1/2" ring goes on 1/2" PEX-a pipe. A 3/4" ring goes on 3/4" pipe. That sounds obvious, but plenty of installers grab rings by color, and ring colors repeat across sizes in some series. Color alone will not save you.
Check the ring bag against the order sheet. If the rings arrived with the fittings, count them and match sizes. I've seen shortages of 15-20% in a bag that was supposed to be complete. Nobody notices until mid-install, which is exactly when you do not want to discover it.
One more thing: the rings should be clean and dry. Avoid rings that feel greasy or have a cloudy film on them. That usually comes from poor storage, and you don't want to gamble on ring performance in a wall you're about to close up.
PEX-a has shape memory—that's the property that makes the expansion system work. You expand the pipe, push the fitting in, and the pipe shrinks back around it. But memory doesn't repair real damage.

Also pull the end of the pipe out of the coil and look at the opening. It should be round and clean. If it's oval or dented, the expansion tool won't grip evenly, and you'll end up with a weak joint.
Here's the step most people skip, and honestly, I used to skip it too. I didn't think lot numbers mattered until we received pipe labeled 1/2" that turned out to have thin walls on part of the coil. We only caught it because a customer called about a leak. Without lot numbers, figuring out which deliveries came from that production run was a mess.
Each coil of Uponor PEX-a pipe has a lot or production number on the label. The Propex fittings are traceable to production runs as well. When something goes wrong, the lot number is the only way to do an organized look-back instead of guessing.
Take 30 seconds to photograph the lot labels and file them in the job folder. It costs nothing at delivery, and it's the difference between replacing a targeted section of pipe and tearing open a floor to figure out what you installed.
Before you start installing 200 joints, assemble one complete joint on the bench: pipe, expansion ring, and the actual fitting you're about to use. Let it set for a minute, then pull on it.
A correctly made PEX-a joint should not separate from a firm tug. If it slides off, something is wrong—wrong ring, undersized pipe, or the expansion tool didn't open the pipe enough. I dry-fit a 3/4" joint once that pulled apart in my hands. The tool head wasn't fully engaging. Catching that on the bench saved me from a building full of bad joints.
This test also shows you whether the ring is seated evenly. It should sit uniform and tight against the fitting. If it's cocked or angled, the joint will leak, plain and simple.
The final step is a one-line entry in a spreadsheet: date, vendor, product, lot number, and any defects found. It's not bureaucracy—it's proof. When a building inspector, GC, or homeowner asks what you installed and where it came from, you'll have the answer in 10 seconds.
On deadline-driven projects, the log is even more valuable. If a problem does appear, having documented that you checked the products and recorded the lot numbers puts you in a way better position than arguing about fault on site. The certainty of having your paperwork straight is worth the 30 seconds it takes.
They're all cross-linked polyethylene, but they're not interchangeable in the expansion system. Propex fittings rely on PEX-a's shape memory—the pipe expands and then contracts back around the fitting. PEX-b and PEX-c are designed for crimp or clamp connections, and they are not compatible with this method. The only way to know what you have is the print on the pipe. No "PEX-a" on the print? Don't use expansion fittings on it.
In my experience, the biggest cost in a failed piping job isn't the parts. It's the rework, the schedule delay, and the damage to trust. The contractors who try to save 15% on an unverified box of fittings are the ones paying twice when the pressure test fails. The 10 minutes you spend checking a delivery is the cheapest insurance you'll buy on that job, and the certainty of knowing the product is correct beats a lower price with doubts attached.
Even established manufacturers have batch defects, shipping damage, and counterfeit copies floating around the supply chain. About 1 in 40 lots I review has something that would have caused a rework if it hadn't been caught at delivery. That's not a knock on Uponor or any other brand—it's just the reality of materials handling.
Bottom line: run all 7 checks. It's about 10 minutes per batch. If you find something, you just saved yourself a redo that would have shown up at the worst possible time. And if you don't find anything, you've got the documentation to prove it.
