After 11 years of ordering and installing PEX-a systems, I've made roughly $38,000 in avoidable mistakes. Not from bad pipe. From the parts that looked easy to pick: manifolds, valves, and trim. I learned this the hard way. A customer found a milk glass handle from a salvage shop and asked if we could make it work. It was beautiful, but it used a proprietary spline, so we needed an adapter. PEX-a expansion fittings help here because they maintain the inside diameter of the pipe, which keeps flow at the rated volume for the shower valve. But a good fitting doesn't make up for missing blocking. If the valve body isn't supported, PEX can move slightly, and the trim won't sit flush. I've opened a finished wall to fix that. The fix had nothing to do with the valve price.
I keep coming back to the door because it exposes the same mental error. If you ask me how much does a door cost, I can't answer without asking about the jamb, casing, hinges, lockset, paint, and haul-away. The product is one line item. The installed door is a project.
