If you're writing a PEX spec, comparing quotes, or about to sign for a delivery of Uponor, this checklist is for you. I'm a procurement manager at a 12-person mechanical contractor. I've managed our materials budget (roughly $2M a year) for six years, negotiated with 15+ vendors, and tracked every PEX order in our cost system. This checklist exists because I've paid for PEX mistakes that could have been caught in ten minutes.

PEX-a and PEX-b are both crosslinked polyethylene, but the crosslinking happens differently. PEX-a is made with the Engel method during extrusion, which gives it a more uniform, more flexible tube that's also more resistant to kinking. For radiant heating jobs, that flexibility means you can bend tighter loops with fewer fittings—and fewer fittings means lower labor cost and fewer potential leak points.
PEX-b isn't bad—in fact, it's widely used in potable water plumbing. But it's not always a drop-in substitute for PEX-a. The two types have different bend radii and usually need different fitting systems. If the design calls for expansion fittings (with PEX-a) and the installer is carrying PEX-b, the job can grind to a halt while someone runs to the supply house.
This isn't just a technical nuance; it affects your total cost. I once compared two quotes for a 4,000 ft order: one supplier offered PEX-a at $0.49/ft, another offered PEX-b at $0.44/ft. The PEX-b quote looked like a $200 win. But the extra fittings and slower install added about $900 in labor. On top of that, the less flexible PEX-b changed how we laid out loops under a large-format tile area (we had these 12×24 color tiles the architect specified). The crew had to add a manifold zone they hadn't planned for, which blew the budget further.
And if you're heating a bedroom with a low Montessori floor bed—a common request these days—you want the loops tucked neatly along the perimeter. PEX-a's tighter bend radius makes that easier. PEX-b can kink more easily in tight spots, and you end up using a lot of bend supports, which eats into the time savings.
Every PEX pipe sold in the U.S. must have a permanent print line with the governing standard (usually ASTM F876), the material designation (PEX-a, PEX-b, or PEX-c), and pressure/temperature ratings. The word "Uponor" is not sufficient. Neither is the model number alone.
For example, the Uponor AquaPEX PEX 5106 is a 1/2" PEX-a pipe. I've seen it listed in online catalogs as just "PEX 5106" or "AquaPEX 5106." But the definitive check is the print line. It should say something like: Uponor AquaPEX PEX-a 5106 ... ASTM F876 .... If you see PEX-b or no type at all, don't accept it.
Honestly, if I had a dollar for every time someone argued that the box said PEX-a but the pipe didn't... Let's just say the box is not part of the installation. The pipe gets rolled out, the box gets recycled. The print line is what stays with the product.
Once, we had a supplier's quote that said "Uponor PEX 5106" and the packing slip also said that. But the pipe itself was a generic PEX-b with a different brand name. The supplier had substituted product to meet a deadline. We caught it because the print line was checked at the job site, not in the office.
Uponor's main PEX pipe lines—AquaPEX, hePEX, and ProPEX—are all PEX-a. The older Wirsbo branding is also PEX-a. So the short answer to "is Uponor PEX-a or PEX-b?" is: the vast majority of their PEX pipe is PEX-a. But don't use that as a shortcut. Product lines change, markets differ, and some regional or specialty pipes might not follow the rule. I've seen imported Uponor-branded pipe in a different spec once (that was messy).
The model number can help narrow it down, but it's not a type code. For instance, the 5106 in AquaPEX PEX 5106 is a catalog code, not a PEX type. Another number like 5107 might be a different size, but still PEX-a. The only way to be certain is the print line, which you checked in Step 2.
Before you place an order, ask the vendor for the product data sheet that shows the material designation. For Uponor AquaPEX, that data sheet will say "PEX-a" and list the applicable standards (typically ASTM F876/F877). At our shop, we attach that PDF to every purchase order. It takes 30 seconds and it gives us a document to point to if there's a substitution.
I audited our 2023 orders after a couple of overruns and found that 6 out of 18 PEX orders had a spec mismatch. Not necessarily the wrong type—sometimes the wrong dimension or pressure rating. After we made this a step in our purchasing process, that number went to zero. (It also helped when the field crew asked "can we just use this?"—the answer was in the PO attachments.)
After I approved the order, I still second-guessed myself for a couple of days. What if the spec sheet revision was outdated? The relief came when the pipe arrived and I matched the print line to what we ordered. It's a small bit of anxiety, but it's a real cost too.
The cheapest bid isn't the cheapest if it's the wrong product. Let me give you a classic example:
We needed 5,000 ft of 1/2" PEX-a for a multi-family job. Vendor A quoted $0.45/ft ($2,250 total). Vendor B quoted $0.38/ft ($1,900 total), but their pipe was PEX-b. It looked like we'd save $350. But the engineer spec required PEX-a, so we either had to request a spec change (which the engineer would likely reject) or replace the pipe. The rework cost—pulling it out, returning it, buying the right pipe, re-installing—came to $1,400 plus a week of schedule delay. Vendor B was no longer cheap.
Also, don't forget storage. If you buy extra rolls to get a volume discount, where do they live while waiting for the next phase? A 5x5 storage unit in my area runs $50–$90 per month, more if it's climate-controlled. I've seen crews save $200 on a bulk order, then spend $240 storing the extra pipe for three months. That's a hidden cost that doesn't show up on the invoice. Ask yourself: "How much is a storage unit for this stuff?" and add that to your total.
This checklist works for our small shop because our orders are steady and we have a consistent crew. If you're a large distributor, you'll need a more automated verification process, but the principle is the same: check the type on the pipe, check the spec sheet, and calculate the total cost—including the cost of being wrong.
